At our Northbrook, Illinois, practice, some of Dr. Sisco’s happiest patients are those who visit him for breast reduction from Highland Park, Glenview, Arlington Heights, the North Shore, and surrounding areas. Making sagging, pendulous breasts perkier and more proportionate can do wonders for a woman’s sense of femininity and confidence. Many of Dr. Sisco’s patients say that they love shopping for cute, delicate bras after surgery—or even having the option of going without a bra for the first time in years.
You Have Options
Breast reduction for our North Shore-area patients is a transformative procedure that has the potential to remedy both physical and emotional discomfort. This surgery typically reduces the size of the breasts while also lifting them, resulting in a more significant change. During your consultation, Dr. Sisco performs a physical evaluation of your breasts and discusses your medical history. Many women seeking breast reduction suffer from physical problems caused by the weight of their breasts, such as chronic back, neck, or shoulder pain. Together, you can also plan the specifics of your surgery.
If you’re satisfied with the size of your breasts but would like to change their shape or position, a breast lift may be more appropriate.
Some patients choose to combine their breast reduction with axillary breast tissue excision—a procedure that removes underarm bulges for more streamlined contours.

Benefits of Breast Reduction
Some of the most significant benefits include:
- Relief from Physical Discomfort: Large breasts tend to cause chronic neck, shoulder, and back pain. Reduction surgery alleviates this discomfort, improving overall posture and physical mobility.
- Improved Lifestyle and Activity Levels: Many patients find it easier to be physically active after surgery. Clothing fits more comfortably, and bras are easier to find and wear.
- Enhanced Aesthetic Proportions: By resizing the breasts to better match the patient's frame, breast reduction helps create a more balanced, youthful, and proportionate silhouette.
- Boosted Confidence and Emotional Well-Being: Individuals often feel more comfortable in their appearance, leading to improved self-esteem and mental wellness.
- Reduction in Skin Irritation: Breast reduction can eliminate issues such as painful shoulder grooves from bra straps, rashes beneath the breast folds, and skin irritation caused by excess weight and friction.
Candidates for Breast Reduction
You may be a good candidate if you:
- Have chronic pain due to breast size.
- Have posture issues or nerve symptoms such as tingling or numbness.
- Have breasts that cause difficulty with physical activity or limit your mobility.
- Suffer from skin irritation, chafing, or infections under the breast fold.
- Are emotionally self-conscious or dissatisfied with your breast size.
- Have disproportionately large breasts compared to the rest of your body.
- Are a non-smoker and in generally good physical health.
- Are realistic about the results and are considering the procedure for personal reasons, not to meet someone else's standards.
Patients should also be at a stable weight and not currently breastfeeding. A consultation is essential to determine if breast reduction is right for your individual goals and medical needs.
Breast Reduction Recovery
Here's what you can expect:
- Initial Healing: Mild to moderate discomfort, swelling, and bruising for the first few days. Manage pain with prescribed or over-the-counter medications.
- Activity Restrictions: No heavy lifting and strenuous activity for at least four to six weeks. Light walking is encouraged to promote circulation.
- Support Garment: A surgical bra or compression attire should be worn to reduce swelling and support healing tissues.
- Work & Social Activities: Most patients return to work and daily activities within one to two weeks, depending on their job.
- Follow-Up: You'll attend post-operative visits to monitor healing and have sutures or drains (if used) removed.
- Final Results: Swelling may take several months to fully resolve, but most individuals experience noticeable improvement in shape and comfort within a few weeks.

Surgery Day & Long-Term Results
Dr. Sisco typically performs breast reduction surgery as an outpatient procedure. Once you are completely anesthetized, he makes an incision—usually anchor-shaped—around your areola, down the lower portion of the breast, and horizontally along the breast crease. Dr. Sisco then removes an amount of breast tissue—determined by the metrics you discussed during your consultation—and tightens the breast skin. He lifts and reshapes the remaining breast tissue and may also reduce the size of the areolas to ensure they’re proportionate in relation to the breasts.
Although you can return home after your procedure, you’ll need to wear a special support garment during the first week or so. Most patients return to sedentary workplaces after about 1 week, with more time needed before resuming vigorous exercise.
In the long term, the results of your breast reduction surgery have the potential to be permanent, providing lifelong comfort and confidence.
